2 . "I Remember Stephanie ..."
Posted by LadyBug on Nov-06-00 at 08:34 PM (EST)
Birgitta, I remember Stephanie's disappearance so well. I believe she was taking care of twins that
night. I tried to follow the story on another web forum which I was a moderator and member.

Stephanie Condon was also included with photos in my 'LadyBug's Garden Of Missing Children', with a
link direct to the posts and updates in that forum.

Unfortunately, that webmaster (as cruel as it was) removed all the posts and removed the 'LadyBug's
Garden' web site, making it inaccessable, nor could I receive messages that were posted into my
guest book, which BTW, the password had been changed and I could not receive those private
messages.

Very cruel it was indeed, especially for the missing children, parents and their loved ones. Was sad
that she used those innocent people in that way when she found that I had become a member of
Jameson's JonBenet forum.

If you or anyone has updates to Stephanie information please post or send e-mail to me and
I will follow up. ALSO, would like web page URL for Stephanie or any links of further
information, please post.

There was an arrest back then on other charges and possibly 'he' was suspect and perhaps that
person holds the answers regarding Stephanie.JMHO

3 . "case on my mind....."
Posted by birgitta on Nov-07-00 at 09:51 AM (EST)
this case is one of the first cases i got interested in,i think the case is interesting and unbeliveble in
so many ways,i have a daughter in stephanie´s age when she disapeared, only my daughter is 13 now
but stephanie was 14 whe she got missing.
i´we been communicating with spirit about this case, and what i feel is that stephanie was abducted
by someone she knew and even trusted, they won´t let me see that persone so i don´t know it it´s
the suspect or not whot got arrested, didn´t they let him free in the end??
i think stephanie opened the door for someone she knew and left outside to talk to the persone and
was then pushed into a car.
i have the feeling that she is dead,i hope i´m wrong but that´s how i feel her spirit.
what i see is a hand and spade(i don´t know if spade is the right word?)and i have the feeling that
stephanie has been burryed somewhere near there might be summercottages(summerhouses).
i think the one who took stephanie was interested in her, because stephanie was taken care of baby
twins that night and they where unharmed at home,i wonder if mikie could make a astrology over
stephanie??or maybe there is one at the nsm community??
i wonder if this make sence and if these summercottages are somewhere there close to where she
lived.
actually i got the feeling that this area i saw had been searched before but nothing found there.
could you found out where there has been a search, ladybug?

Stephanie Condon

Key Assessments: Stephanie was murdered on the night of her abduction. A positive identification and location of her abductor/murderer has been established. Stephanie's body, along with that of a possible second victim, is buried within approximately 2000 meters of the FM radio station transmission tower, in Tri City, Oregon.

A ground/aerial recon Sandman Team will be dispatched to Tri City, in early June, to pinpoint Stephanie's grave site, and to assist in the recovery of her remains.

Ashley Pond and Miranda Gaddis

Key Assessments: Ashley and Miranda were murdered by the same individual, who buried the girls' bodies near each other.

A detailed description of the murderer, as well as his pinpoint location, was passed to Oregon City Police on April 16th, 2002. Authorities have subsequently identified this individual and are persuing the lead.

Forensic expert solves U.S. murder mystery

BODY FOUND: Stephanie Condon.

Bedfordshire investigator finds body missing for four years

A police forensics expert from Bedfordshire solved the four-year mystery of an American teenager's death after being drafted in by the baffled FBI.

Sgt Mark Harrison got the call from American detectives following his groundbreaking work leading the search for Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman and his three-month investigation into the Yarl's Wood fire.

And in a painstaking four-week probe in the state of Oregon, Sgt Harrison found the remains of 14-year-old Stephanie Condon wrapped in a bed cover.

A man is now being prosecuted for her murder.

Sgt Harrison was sworn in as a Deputy Sheriff, used a Black Hawk military helicopter and enlisted convicts on a chain gang for the search on Indian land in the Pacific North-West.

And the expert in new forensic technology said: "I am delighted I was able to help in this case, in particular for Stephanie's family so they can come to terms with what happened to their daughter."

Stephanie, a high school student in Myrtle Creek, Douglas County, disappeared in October 1998 while babysitting for her cousin.

The suspect is believed to have been looking for someone else but, finding Stephanie and in a drunken rage, is accused of abducting the pyjama-wearing teenager at gunpoint and taking her to his home, raping her and shooting her dead.

It is alleged he stored her body under his house until burying her in a shallow grave before police could get a search warrant.

Despite investigations by the city police, County Sheriff's Department, the state police and the FBI, her body had never been found until Sgt Harrison stepped in.

He was called in after the FBI visited the National Crime and Operations Facility, where he is seconded.

The investigator assembled a team of experts and, with military back-up, flew to the USA on May 15.

He said: "I knew with the technology and methods we had and with guidance from my colleagues from the behavioural profiling unit, we could find her if she was there to be found.

"We were met with open arms and people eager to learn the new techniques. We had everything we could possibly ask for to do a job which until then had seemed impossible."

The main suspect in Stephanie's case is Dale Wayne Hill. He went by the home where Stephanie was baby sitting her cousin's children that night and allegedly was the last person to see her alive. He denies having anything to do with her disappearance. He sold a handgun right after she went missing but conveniently can't remember to whom.

Search intensifies for clues in 1998 missing teen case

The News-Review

The search for a missing Riddle girl who disappeared at age 14 in October 1998 became a global effort today as an intense multi-agency search commenced in Douglas County.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office announced Monday the department will work in concert with national and British agencies to hunt for clues in the disappearance of Stephanie Condon, who disappeared from her cousin's house in the Tri-City area while she was baby-sitting.

A Blackhawk helicopter may be seen hovering in open areas at approximately 500 feet to 800 at various points during the search involving the sheriff's office, the National Crime & Operations Faculty of the United Kingdom, the Air National Guard, FBI, National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the University of Oregon.

It is hoped that new leads may develop using the expertise of international search experts and advanced technology.

The helicopter will be flying from mid-morning to late afternoon and will never hover for more than 20 minutes in any one place. Officials may be requesting permission to access Douglas County citizen's property to search for evidence within the next few weeks and ask that the public help in bringing the case to a close.

Search Renewed For Missing 14-Year-Old

Margy Lynch, KOIN 6 News

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- New investigators are on the scene of an old crime, looking for evidence they hope will help solve the case of a missing 14-year-old.
Stephanie Condon has been missing from her Southern Oregon home since October of 1998.

New searchers from the United Kingdom are highly trained to find missing people.

A black hawk helicopter from the Air National Guard will fly over southern Douglas County in the search for evidence in the 1998 disappearance of Condon. It is joined by a highly trained team of search experts from the United Kingdom.

They will use advanced ground penetrating radar to look for a body or any evidence in the case.

"They have great success. These are people from the U.K., this is their job, they do searches. Not once in awhile when child comes missing or they need to find something -- this is something they do every day," said Pam Frank of the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Condon was 14 when she disappeared while babysitting a cousin. Yellow ribbons and pictures of the girl draped buildings and trees across her small town. Investigators began searching for evidence immediately.

"We're interested in blanket, described as a comforter," investigator Joe Perkins said in 1998.

Almost five years later, they're still committed to finding answers.

"We are looking to get the case of Stephanie Condon and find some justice for Stephanie." -- something for which her family has already waited nearly five years.

Detectives were looking at one man as a person of interest. Dale Wayne Hill, arrested on unrelated charges, admits that he saw Condon the night of her disappearance.

He has never been charged in connection with her case.

Investigators Search Ground For Body Of Missing Girl

Margy Lynch, KOIN 6 News

RIDDLE, Ore. -- A cold case is getting new life. Nearly five years after her disappearance, investigators say they may be closer to knowing what happened to Stephanie Condon.
Investigators are searching an area in Riddle not far from where Stephanie was last seen. Searchers won't tell us exactly what led them to this new spot, but it's suddenly become a "high priority area" for finding new evidence.

Workers clear brush in an area just 5 minutes from where Stephanie disappeared in October 1998. They're making room for special ground-penetrating radar that shoots a beam into the surface.

"The speed at which that beam bounces back will actually tell us whether there are human remains or whether it's just a rock in the soil surface," British police officer Mark Harrison said.

The investigative team is from the United Kingdom.

"You can see the soil area moving along, and if it disappears and starts up again, it might indicate there's a hole," he said.

Last week, they used a Blackhawk helicopter to look for clues in the case. That lead them here.

"We think of areas where somebody might have some privacy, hide something or a period of time as was the case here, without somebody coming across and finding them," Harrison said.

Detectives say Stephanie's family is waiting anxiously.

"I had Mrs. Condon down here yesterday. She was able to see what was going on and meet with National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. So for her, I think its reassurance that this case is ongoing and we haven't quit," Douglas County Detective Joe Perkins said.

And they haven't quit looking at Dale Wayne Hill, the prime suspect in the case. Hill was arrested on unrelated burglary charges just weeks after Stephanie disappeared.

Hill has not been charged in the case. He's scheduled to be released from prison on his burglary charge on Oct. 4, 2004.

Searchers here will continue to look for evidence and for Stephanie's remains -- anything that could tell them what happened to this young girl.

The United Kingdom search team specializes in old unsolved murder cases. They work with police dog handlers and search officers that specialize in finding human remains. The group goes all over the world to do their work.

The lead investigator says his oldest successful case went unsolved for 23 years before they got a break. He says they never give up on a case. As new technology develops, they go back and do more.

Technology rekindles search

CONDON DISAPPEARANCE UPDATE

Helicopter search

Two British officers and Douglas Interagency Narcotics Team Cmdr. John Hamlin right, walk toward a Blackhawk helicopter at the Roseburg Airport recently. They have being using the helicopter and imaging technology to search for Stephanie Condon's body in south Douglas County.
ANDY BRONSON/The News-Review

CHRISTIAN BRINGHURST

RIDDLE -- Armed with a military Blackhawk helicopter, radar imaging equipment, cadaver-sniffing dogs and the expertise of British homicide investigators, police are teasing out some new leads in an old case.

The search for Stephanie Condon has gone on since October 1998, when she disappeared at the age of 14 while baby-sitting in Tri City.

Police still have not charged anybody in the case, although they continue to look at former Myrtle Creek resident Dale Wayne Hill who they believe was the last person to see Stephanie alive. Hill is serving a six-year prison sentence in state prison in Pendleton on an unrelated robbery conviction.

Eager for the family and community to see some closure on the case, Douglas County sheriff's detectives appealed to the National Crime and Operations Faculty in Bramshill, England, for assistance. Detectives learned about a new search protocol run at NCOF -- the British equivalent of the FBI -- through talking with some of their officers at a major crimes convention in Canyonville.

Detective Joe Perkins flew to England to present the Stephanie Condon case for their consideration, after which the search experts donated their time and imaging technology for the three-week effort.

Investigators began their search with a helicopter survey two weeks ago of the land around the Tri City area where Stephanie was last seen. A Blackhawk helicopter hovered over several areas for up to 20 minutes at a time as experts pinpointed areas where somebody would be most likely to dispose of a body.

"When we look at areas (to search) we think of areas where someone had some privacy" and some reasonable expectation the body would not be found, said Mark Harrison, national search adviser with NCOF.

In England, he said, "We never give up on a case, we continually review it." The oldest case Harrison successfully solved was a 23-year-old murder investigation.

Thursday, police showed the procedure to members of the media at one of the areas of interest identified during the flights -- a patch of ground off Lawson Bar Road in Myrtle Creek. Work crew inmates cleared weeds and brambles from the grass-covered patch along the bank of the South Umpqua River to allow searchers access to the ground underneath.

"We needed to take the brush back five years," explained Perkins, who is the lead investigator in the case.

Once the brush has been cleared from the site, a ground-penetrating radar device is deployed, which emits radio waves underground to provide a rough subterranean picture for investigators to analyze. They are looking for depressions, or disturbances in the natural contours of the soil which may indicate a body has been buried there.

The technology is most commonly used for surveying purposes such as locating pipes or other underground utilities. However, it has been used recently to locate mass graves in Kosovo and weapons caches buried in Northern Ireland, according to Harrison and U.K. Ministry of Defense research scientist Mark Yates.

"We're actually adapting technology for our own specific purpose," Yates said. "In effect, it's an X-ray through the ground."

Anomalies in the soil are noted and stored in the computer of the ground-penetrating radar device so that forensics experts can return later to excavate anything that may lie beneath.

Harrison, a 15-year police veteran who also specializes in counterterrorism, said British police have honed their search techniques fighting terrorists in Northern Ireland. The weapons they routinely find underground using imaging technology are often buried in rural terrain not unlike the Myrtle Creek area they searched Thursday. He would not say how many other such areas they are searching, except to say there were "several."

Donations from local organizations helped defray the county's estimated $12,000 cost for the search. The Ford Family Foundation and the Mercy Foundation each donated $1,500 toward transportation costs for the British investigators and other incidental expenses, while Seven Feathers Hotel & Casino Resort in Canyonville provided free lodging for the men.

"If it had not been for those organizations, financially, our office could not have taken on this effort," Perkins said.

Perkins brought Stephanie's mother, Christine Condon, to observe the search effort on Wednesday. The area is approximately a five-minute drive from the place police believe her daughter disappeared.

"For her, I think, it's reassuring that this case is still ongoing," he said.

British Web Site: 'Stephanie Condon's Body Found'

Report Is Hoax

RIDDLE, Ore. -- A report claiming that the body of a missing Oregon girl was found is a hoax.
Last month, a specially trained investigative team from the United Kingdom helped Oregon detectives search for Stephanie Condon.

Condon was 14 years old when she disappeared while baby-sitting in October 1998. They used advanced ground-penetrating radar to look for the girl's body or any evidence in the case.

A story posted on June 27 on the British Web site Bedford Today is titled "Forensic Expert Solves U.S. Murder Mystery."

"A police forensics expert from Bedfordshire solved the four-year mystery of an American teenager's death after being drafted in by the baffled FBI.
"Sgt. Mark Harrison got the call from American detectives following his groundbreaking work leading the search for Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman and his three-month investigation into the Yarl's Wood fire.

"And in a painstaking four-week probe in the state of Oregon, Sgt. Harrison found the remains of 14-year-old Stephanie Condon wrapped in a bed cover.

"A man is now being prosecuted for her murder."

However, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office says the story is not true. Detectives are not sure where the story originated.
