Friday, October 25, 2002 The files of the National Enquirer are bulging with research from its
investigations that didn't make it into the tabloid's regular pages.
Now the paper's owners, Boca Raton-based American Media Inc., has
figured out a way to use all that material: Start publishing books.
On Monday, AMI makes its debut in the book-publishing world with Sex,
Power and Murder: Chandra Levy and Gary Condit -- The Affair That
Shocked America. The 194-page paperback, written by David Wright and
Don Gentile with Nicholas Maier, offers pages of seamy details about the
slain intern's relationship with Condit, a Democratic member of the U.S.
House from California.
"Certain topics are too salacious, too graphic to put into the Enquirer,
especially on the crime material," said Valerie Virga, president of newly
formed AMI Books. "You can get much more in-depth and explain things in
much more thorough fashion in a book than you can in a weekly 2-page
report."
Virga said AMI Books has received 250,000 advance orders for the $5.99
paperback, which she calls "beyond amazing."
AMI Books plans to publish one book a month. Volumes are planned on Liza
Minnelli, Michael Jackson, Rosie O'Donnell, and the JonBenet
Ramsey murder case. Another is called They're Killing Our Children, and
will examine the recent wave of child abductions and murders.
Virga, who has worked as a senior editor for the Enquirer for more than 20
years, said AMI Chief Executive Officer David Pecker approached her
about running the new book division after she helmed a volume of memorable
Enquirer photographs.
"I have been here long enough to have an overview of what we've got tucked
away," she said.
AMI also is exploring publishing a new auto magazine -- the company already
owns AMI Auto World Magazine for auto buyers -- as well as movie
projects, spokesman Gerald McKelvey said.
