"National Enquirer to publish Ramsey book"

By Susan T. Port, Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Friday, October 25, 2002

The files of the National Enquirer are bulging with research from its
investigations that didn't make it into the tabloid's regular pages.

Now the paper's owners, Boca Raton-based American Media Inc., has
figured out a way to use all that material: Start publishing books.

On Monday, AMI makes its debut in the book-publishing world with Sex,
Power and Murder: Chandra Levy and Gary Condit -- The Affair That
Shocked America. The 194-page paperback, written by David Wright and
Don Gentile with Nicholas Maier, offers pages of seamy details about the
slain intern's relationship with Condit, a Democratic member of the U.S.
House from California.

"Certain topics are too salacious, too graphic to put into the Enquirer,
especially on the crime material," said Valerie Virga, president of newly
formed AMI Books. "You can get much more in-depth and explain things in
much more thorough fashion in a book than you can in a weekly 2-page
report."

Virga said AMI Books has received 250,000 advance orders for the $5.99
paperback, which she calls "beyond amazing."

AMI Books plans to publish one book a month. Volumes are planned on Liza
Minnelli, Michael Jackson, Rosie O'Donnell, and the JonBenet
Ramsey murder case. Another is called They're Killing Our Children, and
will examine the recent wave of child abductions and murders.

Virga, who has worked as a senior editor for the Enquirer for more than 20
years, said AMI Chief Executive Officer David Pecker approached her
about running the new book division after she helmed a volume of memorable
Enquirer photographs.

"I have been here long enough to have an overview of what we've got tucked
away," she said.

AMI also is exploring publishing a new auto magazine -- the company already
owns AMI Auto World Magazine for auto buyers -- as well as movie
projects, spokesman Gerald McKelvey said.

Probably next Tuesday after the Condit/Levy book hits the stand. It was quite recently that LE started focusing on another suspect. If the book attacks Condit, I expect he will lawyer up pretty fast.

Um... he already has a lawyer.

Yeah, I would guess maybe next Tuesday.

But the tabloids have always played that game - semantics and all that. Maybe the book won't name Condit as anything more than a suspect - - and that was true.

Just like the Ramseys were telling the truth when they said Chris Wolf was a suspect.

THAT case should get tossed - - we are waiting on the judge - - I am wondering what is taking so long. I don't think the Wolf case should have gotten THIS far.

Though many people bought many Ramsey books, very few actually read them! I couldn't believe how many BORG said they would NEVER read the Ramsey book, wouldn't give them a dime. Others said they read it until they got sick on page 5. Many posters admit they have never read any of the books - - just watched TV stories and the forums.

I think quite a few did go through Thomas' book - - just so they might quote him and attack. But read it? Nope, don't think many did that.

I listed all the books and after I did read them - - and yes, I have read all of them that I could lay my hands on - I wrote reviews.

I think Schiller did a good job - - but he was limited because many people wouldn't talk to him, others lied to him and he had to go to the press before the GJ ended so it is like having the power go out in the theater before the film ends.

I think Thomas did a great job exposing the lack of case against the Ramseys and how he was supporting a theory that is not supported by the evidence.

I think the Ramseys did a good job - - but I know they had to leave out a lot because they only had so many pages - - a lot was left out - -then the lawyers went through and more was lost. But I thought they did a good job presenting their story - - warts and all. They didn't try to look like saints - - they just told the story as they remember it.

Linda McLean's book was very good if you want to know more about Patsy and the kind of person she is.

The other books, well, most were garbage. Reversed speech and balloons.... those writers lost me. The pornographic fantasies from another author were really obscene. But I read them all.

Many didn't read one.

I tried to read Hodges book, but just couldn't make it past about page 50. He has a serious problem, assuming he actually believes what he is writing. A doctor who needs a doctor.

The American Constitution says he has a right to voice his opinion - - and he did.

I have the same right.

I read both his books - - and I think he needs a straight jacket. He has a very warped and perverted mind and he is mean to boot.
