"WHY INVESTIGATE HELGOTH?"

I started a thread about Helgoth and I wanted to draw out one aspect of the result. I would like to speak about why.

If the Ramseys still were not speaking to the BPD at the date of Hunter's speech and they had yet to arrange an interview with mutually agreeable terms, then:

why was Helgoth ever investigated?

I had always thought it was because he had been a Ramsey suspect. But at that stage they had no suspects and how would they have known Helgoth to think of him as suspect.

What was it about Helgoth that led the BPD to him?

Thoughts?

Was there a link between Helgoth and Colfax?
Was there a link between Helgoth and McElroy?
Were any of them linked to the McSanta's sons?

Helgoth was investigated because a friend told authorities he may have been involved in the Ramsey case. He was distraught about JonBenet's death. This was in addition to the boots and stun gun.

from the Longmont Times-Call on Hunter's February, 1997 press conference:

``We're going to solve this case and we're going to do it our way,'' Hunter emphasized at a February news conference.

Hunter has used such phrases as, ``We're in this for the long haul.'' In addressing the killer or killers, Hunter said ``We will find you'' and ``You have stripped us of any mercy we might have had at the beginning. We will seek justice and you will pay.''

-----------------------
Helgoth committed suicide the day after Hunter spoke directly to the killer, which may be a coincidence; then again, maybe not.

DA Hunter threatens to seek death penalty
By ELLIOT ZARET
Camera Staff Writer
February 14, 1997

Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter delivered a strong message to JonBenet Ramsey's killer Thursday - he may seek the death penalty.

"I want to say something to the person or persons that committed this crime - the person or persons that took this baby from us," Hunter said, looking ominously into the television cameras at Thursday's news conference.

"I mentioned the list of suspects narrows - soon there will be no one left on the list but you ... You have stripped us of any mercy we may have had in the beginning of this case. We will see that justice is served in this case, and that you pay for what you did."

Hunter said prosecutors working on the crime have consulted with the Capital Crimes Unit of the Colorado attorney general's office. The prosecutor has sought the death penalty in other cases, but never tried a case as a capital crime.

Richard Kling, clinical professor of law at Chicago-Kent College of Law and a defense attorney who tries capital cases, said the circumstances surrounding JonBenet's murder - that she had been strangled and sexually assaulted, her wrists tied and duct tape over her mouth - are ripe for a public outcry to execute her killer.

"If I were going to draft a death penalty poster child, this is the kid I'm going to draft," said Kling, who opposes the death penalty. "I'm not sure anyone is going to be empathetic with the killer of this child."

Still, Kling said it is unclear why Hunter would announce that he is seeking the death penalty when he hasn't even named a suspect yet.

"I can't think of any advantage - is it going to scare anyone (into confessing)? Probably not." said Kling. "If I were the killer and I heard (Hunter's statement), it would flush me into the furthest corner of the forest."

His "suicide" (some question that finding) took place the day after JonBenét's autopsy was released and the day after Hunter gave a speech saying they were closing in on the killer.

That had to raise some eyebrows.

The FACT that a pair of Hi-Tec boots was found next to his body was also very interesting.

A friend of his stepped forward and said Helgoth may have been involved.

When the pattern marks on JonBenét's body were identified as stun gun marks, it was very interesting to note the stun gun in the photos of Helgoth's death scene.

Has Helgoth been cleared? Certainly not "officially" in a press release. And I have not seen a lab report saying the DNA on JonBenét's body could NOT have been contributed by Helgoth.

Sometimes it seems the silence of good men is not a good thing.

If people can be eliminated by checking the DNA, why not do it?

The silence of good men cannot be good...

What good men? The BPD? hmpf. They are trying to frame the Ramsey's and I resent it!!!

Has anyone seen the latest rag sheet at the grocery store? Poor Patsy.

found next to, not "on" or "in another room". Sounds like someone was pointing a finger, just as the "note" pointed a finger.

>A friend of his stepped forward and said Helgoth may have

Wonder if they knew where that friend was when Helgoth was killed?
(The fox that finds it lies behind it) is what I first think.

Might've been intresting IF Helgoth asked his friend where he went with his boots and stun gun?

I'd personally be interested in the friend myself. Sounds more like a way to get off the hook easily, especially if it WAS the friend and Helgoth seemed to him as if he was going to mention his friend borrowing things. That use of the word "friend" kept me from looking for friends here. The news would report that one 'friend' killed another 'friend' during an argument. Never heard the word 'friend' used in other reports other places so I thought here would be a BAD place to seek friends. Not true, it was just bad wording from the reporter on the ONLY TV station we could get.

I'll do a paraphrase of a quote I read on here. Shelves and shelves of untested DNA awaiting testing WHEN the funds come in to get it done.

Yes, cruel is a good word to describe the Enquirer's latest non-story on the Ramseys. Nothing new, just a mega-BORG tilt to both the Brennan article and some post-chemo pictures of Patsy, spiced up with a tidbit or two from the forums and some annoying comments from Silverman.

Is it just me, or did the Enquirer seem to be stepping a bit more lightly than in the past?

Yes, the Enquirer article added (in parentheses) that Burke has "been cleared in the case."

I recently posted a photo of the boots - - no photos of the body or the room have been put on the net. They were part of the Lou Smit power point presentation so some media and others HAVE seen them. I have seenthem a couple times and find no reason not to say that there were several things in that room I thought should have been taken in to be checked immediately - - but weren't. The room was very messy - - I wondered if the other end to the paintbrush or maybe a hair tie or anythingelse - - matching cord or tape, perhaps, would have been found if anyone bothered to look.

Helgoth's autopsy is on the net - - the description is pretty graphic.

I was speaking to my brother this morning as we were stretching for our run and he said to me that guys who are into wearing Steel Cap boots will buy the same brand time and again so that it becomes just like a signature. For eg he always wears Colorado.

A guy would be known for being a Hi Tek wearer. it is interesting that Kenady thought suspicious enough of Helgoth to draw him to the BPD's attention.

Where on the net? if I just do a search, will I find it?

There were a couple news stories on the boots around the end of 2000 - but it might not be easy to find the whole story unless you have the old forum threads. We had a lot of detail on the story.

There is also a piece of land the Helgoth family owned which was up for sale.

The city wanted this land and would screw up potential sales by not allowing interested buyers in improving the land for their usage. The city ultimately purchased the land from the family- which if I remember correctly, the Helgoth family owned, for like 40 years.

The city purchased additional joining properties, but paid the Helgoth family less than they paid the other property owners.

Helgoth was also in the military- but was released, again, if I remember correctly- after 13 months.

During the month of JonBenet's "kidnapping/murder", Helgoth and his father were renting or looking into renting, (I forgot!) a cabin removed from town. (Beaver hair?)

There were alot of different things which made him stand out to me.

The city didn't treat Valmont Auto Parts any differently then a lot of property owners. The city is ANTI chain stores (ie: Walmart). It's not unusual for some big chain to come to town...option land...and then go for a zoning change....and get turned down. The land no doubt had contamination on it, because of its use. The newspaper quoted one of the owners as saying, they really didn't mind going out of business, because people couldn't fix their fords and chevys in their driveways---their business was declining.

I think the owners made a good deal with the city and walked away happy. Hard to say what the young Helgoth thought about the whole thing. It appears working at the Auto Parts yard was the only job he really held.
