"Tidbits from Singular"

LAST EDITED ON Oct-26-03 AT 09:13 PM (EST)

I happened to find Stephen Singular's book, "Presumed Guilty" (hardback)in the library so I am reading it and wanted to share a few tidbits that I found interesting.

page 61:
SHAPIRO TO SINGULAR:
"I found a piece of stick on the Ramsey property. It looks just like the wooden part of the garotte that was wrapped around JonBenet's neck. I also found a piece of string tied to one of the trees. It looks just like the cord that was on the garotte. I'm gonna break this case wide open, man..."

Page 100,
SINGULAR TO HUNTER:
I inquired if Fleet White had ever come under any suspicion.
The D.A. studied me inquisitively. "Why do you ask that"
"Just curious."
The atmosphere in the room had been very relaxed, like a couple of old acquaintances talking away an afternoon over a beer i a tavern, but White's name caused a slight shift in the air.
Hunter said that John Ramsey and White had gotten into a bad argument in Georgia, when thay had taken JonBenet there for the burial. The altercation - unreported in the media - had become so heated, the DA continued, that the police had to be called in.
"The cops stayed at the house," Hunter said, "for about six hours."
"Six hours?"
"Six hours."
That's a very long time."
"Yes, it is."
I asked what they were fighting about.
"The Ramseys have never said. White has told us that it was he wanted John Ramsey to cooperate more with the authorities and Ramsey said no."
"Why was White so concerned about that?"
"I don't know."
"Do you believe White"
The DA hesitated and then said, "Íve met the man, and he made me very uncomfortable. He's six-foot-four, with big shoulders and huge hands. An iron grip. He just gave me a feeling. We know one thing for sure. The Ramseys and the Whites stopped being friends after the trip to Georgia. Thats strange, because they used to go sailing together and had been very close. They socialized a lot in the past and the Ramseys had gone over to their home on Christmas night. Both families had young daughters the same age. We've heard that Daphne White was JonBenet's best friend.
"Has anyone talked to Daphne"
Social Services has, but I'm not satisfied with what they've done"....

p. 102
SINGULAR TO HUNTER:
According to Pam Griffin," I said, "White was very upset the day after the body was found. Pam told me that he wanted to keep people away from Patsy Ramsey."
"He did?"
Why would he have been so worried about Patsy"
"I don't know."
"Why would he have fought so bitterly with John"
"I don't know"
"What was the real source of the conflict"
Hunter looked at me and shrugged.

page 109:
PAM GRIFFIN TO SINGULAR ABOUT SIMMONS (JonBenet's photographer):
"As time went on after the murder, Randy just became hysterical. It was odd because I'd never heard him cry before about anything. He began calling me late at night and saying that people were going to come out to where he lived and kill him. He had a wild, scary sound in his voice. Then he said something that really stopped me."
"What was that"
He said that he didn't have an alibi for the night of last December 25. 'Why do you need an alibi' I asked him. He wouldn't answer that question. I asked him where he was on Christmas night. He said that he didn't want to talk about it. In the past, he's always wanted to talk about everything. "

Pam went on to say the BPD never questioned her about Randy. Also Randy had once wanted to shoot Kristine (Pam's daughter) nude, but Pam refused.

Shapiro told me about the rope - not a thing about a stick. The rope was not a match. And Shapiro didn't break the case.

No way the cops were there for 6 hours.

Interesting - truth be told, sometimes the interviews didn't include questions you and I would think basic... don't understand that.

I would like to know the truth of that story.

More on Simons from "Presumed Guilty", page 115:

"Two days after I spoke with Hunter about Randy Simons, Pam Griffin told me about a photograph Simons had taken of her daughter. It showed Kristine with a kite Simons had made himself. Attached to the kite was a white, nylonlike material bearing some resemblance to the cord that had been tied around JonBenet's wrist. During one of Simons' panicky late-night calls to Griffin, he had asked her if she recognized the material on the girl's wrist."

Together they looked at the photo of Kristine but were unable to judge whether it matched the cord on JonBenet's wrist. Pam had never seen the photo of JonBenet's wrist and Singular felt unqualified to make a reasonable judgement. Singular later took the photo to Hunter and it was then put in the "war room" by DeMuth and Ainsworth, who were assisting Hunter with the investigation at the time.

Interesting - I hope the new team has followed up on this. Simons went into a psychiatric hospital after being found walking naked in the street - I believe that would have made it hard for LE to talk to him. But could they have searched his house? Interesting question.

Singular's book is revealing about the investigation itself. Here's a few more interesting things.

In his discussion with Armistead, who seemed disinterested and annoyed by Singular's line of thought, (pageants, photography, and pornography), Singular asked(page 130):
"Do you think anyone really wants to solve this case, Ellis?"
"I do."
"You do?"
"We're doing what we can,' he said, his voice again testy."Nobody knows exactly what the truth is, and it takes time to get there."

Singular says the two people who seem most suspicious are Fleet White and Randy Simons.

Singular told Hunter Simons' phone number. Hunter gave it to Smit who said it was a wrong number. Later Hunter asked Singular to check the number. Singular called Pam Griffin. She verified the number was correct. Singular told Hunter that he never answers his phone. He leaves strange messages on his answering machine like he is in the garden and will call back shortly. But he doesn't return calls. So Hunter dialed the number. Simons answered. Hunter hung up immediately.

So why did Smit say it was a wrong number?

Singular learned that a woman in Charlevoix, while househunting, saw a picture of JonBenet wearing nothing but a feather boa, and made a big thing of it, calling friends. That prompted Singular to re-interview Simons regarding his non-alibi, although his whereabouts at the time of the crime remained as mysterious after the reinterview. p.189

Simons stated that he was at his farm, alone. He had an alibi up to a particular time, but since the time of the crime was not publicized, he did not know if his alibi was good. But the question of "where was he" at the time of the crime was skirted.
