# a!1AQa"q2B#$Rb34rC%Scs5&DTdE£t6UeuF'Vfv7GWgw(8HXhx )9IY Erica Beasley's legal quandary ironic would be quite an understatement.

The 23-year-old manager of Boulder's Espresso Roma coffee house was arrested on felony drug charges Tuesday, just one day after she announced the eviction of her store's next-door neighbor - the Boulder Police Department - from an office in the same building.

Beasley's husband, Louis Barrett Beasley, was also arrested. According to police, each has been charged with two Class 4 felonies: Marijuana cultivation, and possession and conspiracy to cultivate.

The couple were arrested at their Boulder home, where police said they confiscated nearly a pound of recently harvested marijuana, along with 10 plants and paraphernalia associated with growing the drug.

"We don't see this as a large procedure by any stretch of the imagination," said Boulder Police Cmdr. John Eller said. "What we've uncovered is a small but productive growing operation."

Retribution denied

Eller denied yesterday that the arrests were in retribution for the eviction. "In this particular case, I personally wanted to make sure that we weren't nitpicking," he said. The store is owned by Sandy Boyd, but Beasley made public statements earlier this week about why the department was being evicted.

An anonymous tip led narcotics detectives to the coffee shop itself, but Detective Steve Thomas said he found no evidence that drugs were being sold there.

"We did no transactions" on University Hill, a busy enclave of shops and restaurants where the shop is located.

Thomas estimated the value of the seized marijuana at about $1,500 and figured the growing equipment might be worth several thousand dollars.

Eller said Tuesday's arrests were one in a series of small busts aimed at combating the Hill's rising drug problem. He said there were nine drug-related arrests last month, involving everything from heroin to hallucinogenic mushrooms.

"We know that there has been a shift in the last six months," Thomas said. "We know that we laxed our control stance on the Hill, and we know for a fact that we're having increased problems up there."

Beasley was unavailable for comment yesterday.

Not an 'operation'

Arrest records show that Louis Beasley repeatedly told investigators that the marijuana was for personal consumption only.

"It's not an 'operation,'" he is quoted as saying in the arrest report. "We huff a lot of weed. We like smoking marijuana. We don't sell to anyone else, or else we'd have money."

Espresso Roma officials first said they were evicting the police department because they wanted to add a ventilated smoking area to comply with the city's new smoking ordinance. But Tuesday, Beasley told a local newspaper the real reason was that police failed to cooperate with the shop in a zoning dispute last fall.

Police Cmdr. Mark Beckner, who is in charge of the Hill annex, said he has not received an official eviction notice, but the search for new office space on the Hill has already begun.

"We're not going to leave. If we have to, we'll be there in a mobile unit."

attack. This wasn't in the University Hill area---however, these were two guys that were surprised and brutally assaulted the woman that lived there. Were they ever caught? Did they add a stun gun to their burglary kit after the ferocious fight the woman put up? <P><BR>DAILY CAMERA <BR>WOMAN STABBED, BEATEN BY INTRUDERS, POLICE SAY <BR>Wednesday, October 16, 1996 <BR>Section: TODAY <BR>Edition: FIRST <BR>Page: 1C <BR>By ALLI KRUPSKI Camera Staff Writer <P>Two men beat, stabbed and attempted to strangle a 36-year-old Boulder woman Tuesday after she discovered them burglarizing her apartment, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Department. <P>The woman arrived at her home in the Meadow Creek Apartments in Gunbarrel about 5:45 p.m. and walked into her kitchen, authorities said. Two male intruders then attacked her for about five minutes, said sheriff's Detective Steve Aubry. <P> <BR>"She just caught them by surprise," Aubry said. "So they came up from both sides and started pummeling her with something that she thought was either a stick or a baseball bat." <BR>The men also tried to tie the woman with duct tape, said Sgt. Greg Schumann. Witnesses said one man jumped from the apartment's balcony and the other man ran out the front door. <P>The two assailants fled south on foot with the woman's purse, which contained some cash, a checkbook and possibly a credit card, Aubry said. <P>The woman called authorities, who took her to Boulder Community Hospital, Schumann said. Doctors were treating the woman Tuesday night for stab wounds, a possible broken left leg, broken ribs and cuts and bruises, a hospital spokeswoman said. <P>Investigators sealed the area and searched unsuccessfully for the assailants for about an hour, officials said. Officials did not find signs of forced entry. The woman's boyfriend, who also lives in the apartment, was not home at the time of the attack, authorities said. <P>Witnesses described the assailants as white, in their late teens to early 20s, with short, brownish hair. Both men wore dark clothing, Aubry said. <P>Anyone with information about the robbery should call the sheriff's department at 441-3650. <BR> <BR>

other unsolved murders: <P><BR>DAILY CAMERA <BR>UNSOLVED DEATHS<BR>POLICE HAVE NO LEADS, MAKE NO CONNECTIONS<P>Saturday, December 27, 1997 <BR>Section: MAIN <BR>Edition: SECOND <BR>Page: 1A <BR>Boulder police have been unable to link the brutal beating death of University of Colorado senior Susannah Chase this week to any of a number of other recent questionable deaths or assaults in the area but have not stopped pursing possible connections. <P>"We have not yet established a connection between the Chase homicide and any other death, but I`ve not excluded that possibility," Detective Kerry Yamaguchi said Friday. Yamaguchi is leading eight detectives working on the Chase investigation. <P> <BR>More than 100 calls related to the Chase killing have been made to a police tip line, but there remain no suspects in the case. <BR>Chase was found brutally beaten in an alley north of Pearl Street between 19th and 20th streets early Sunday morning, apparently having been dragged part of the way there after being beaten near her Spruce Street home. She died late Monday of head injuries. Police say she was walking alone from the Downtown Mall to her home sometime after 1 a.m. Sunday morning when the beating occurred. <P>Yamaguchi said although a baseball bat was recovered near the scene, "We have not confirmed if this bat was the weapon, and we don`t anticipate being able to rule it in or out for some time." The blood on the bat is being analyzed at Colorado Bureau of Investigation. <P>Two other CU women were hit on the head and dragged before escaping their assailants near CU housing north of Boulder Creek this fall. <P>Questions also remain about several deaths that have occurred in the Boulder area in the last seven months. Among those are the Sept. 3 killing of a 48-year-old homeless man, David Emmit Simpson, known on the street as Mad Dog. Like Chase, Simpson`s face was beaten. In another case, Jeanette Lundgren was found dead in an irrigation ditch on the south side of Liquor Mart on Sept. 30. The coroner has yet to determine how the 48-year-old mother died. <P>All three unsolved deaths occurred in areas frequented by Boulder`s resident indigent population. But some of the homeless say it isn`t fair to look to them as especially suspect in the case. <P>Steven Enwright, a homeless man, said life on the street is too difficult as it is for the many homeless who are mentally and physically damaged. <P>"They are too easy to blame. Anytime you have drugs, you have violence. You can`t blame the homeless," Enwright said. <P>Darren Roberge grew up in Boulder, but now lives in Mesa, Ariz. In response to a Daily Camera question about the Chase murder posed Thursday, Roberge also pointed to drugs as a culprit and said escalating violence in his hom" cellpadding="1" cellspacing="0">

      # color="#000099">Yes, Margoo.
It seems Fleet was very prompt to 'act strangely' and one wonders not only why but particularly what role the BPD had in prompting such a trip to see Bynum.

If it was something the BPD had said to him, perhaps in an accusatorial manner, we know that the accusation did not in-fact come from the Ramseys despite what Fleet White may have been told or may have assumed.

We do know that although Bynum did not practice criminal law he immediately perceived the fact that the BPD were focused solely on the parents and would not be budging one bit away from that obsession and he realized the Ramseys were in no condition to think properly or be on their guard at all.

But what would cause Fleet White to go troting to a lawyer to say anything at all? Fleet White has never seemed the gregarious type with lots of friends.
