Charges in case of long-missing boy: Father is accused of murder in Tahoe case; new evidence is found.
By Peter Hecht
Bee Staff Writer
For more than 15 years, investigators at the South Lake Tahoe Police Department yearned for resolution, and justice, for the little boy with reddish, curly hair.
El Dorado County Assistant District Attorney Hans Uthe said one evidence technician kept a picture of 4-year-old Alexander Olive on his desk. The boy vanished in late 1985 or early 1986, never to be found. Police believed he was dead -- and they felt they knew who killed him.
But for years, authorities couldn't make a case against the suspected murderer, Alexander's own father -- Ulysses H. Roberson, a cult-like figure who allegedly called himself a "mystic master." Roberson, who is reputed to have lured several women into abusive relationships, ultimately went to prison in Washington state for beating an 8-year-old boy and raping a 13-year-old girl.
In South Lake Tahoe, where Alexander had briefly lived In South Lake Tahoe, where Alexander had briefly lived with his father in a rented house in the Tahoe Keys area, frustrated authorities came to call the boy's disappearance "the case that never goes away."
"It was one case that everybody wanted to solve," said South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Martin Hewlett. "... It really pulled the heart strings of a lot of detectives. When you have a murder of a 4-year-old child, that impacts everybody. We really wanted to see closure."
While Alexander still hasn't been found, El Dorado County District Attorney Gary Lacy last week filed murder charges against Roberson after authorities submitted new witness testimony and DNA evidence. Police say the evidence confirms their long-held suspicions that Roberson beat the little boy to death and then hid the body, all because he had soiled his pants.
<a href="http://www.sacbee.com/news/news/local03_20011030.html";>http://www.sacbee.com/news/news/local03_20011030.html<;/a>
