Michael Helgoth, age 26, was found dead in his bedroom. He had been shot in the chest and it was termed a suicide. There were a pair of High-tech boots by the body, a stun gun lay on the bed and there was a tape recorder nearby. The coroner called the sheriff. The sheriff requested that the BPD do some investigating, but the BPD refused to get involved. The family was not questioned about "Boots'" possible involvement in the Ramsey case. A friend of Boots called the authorities and said he felt there was a reason for the authorities to seriously investigate the lead. The police refused. More than 3 years later, in July of 2000, the friend would give the boots and other materials to the Ramsey investigators. When the city was going to demolish the house (for a park) and not search, the friend broke into the house to gather possible evidence, was put off by the police then arrested!
.
Still, in the summer of 2000, the police were forced to give the boots to the CBI for examination and the media picked up the story on the "suspect" who was never investigated - the reason never explained by the authorities.

Detectives Thomas and Gosage were in Atlanta and interviewed Lucinda's friend, Harry Smiles, as well as Ramsey friends Susan and Gary Sperduto, Carol and Bill Simpson, and Annis Westmoreland Lyles.

By mid February, the authorities were aware of the fact that there were few unmatched prints to be found at the crime scene. The killer may have worn gloves. The CBI and FBI found no fingerprints on the duct tape or paint brush, none on the flashlight found in the kitchen, or even on the batteries found in the flashlight. There was a bowl of pineapple found on the dining room table - no one knows if the killer touched that bowl - the only prints on it were from Patsy and Burke. A cup was next to the bowl - - only Burke's prints were on the glass.
.
There was an unidentified palm print on the door in the basement. It would still be unidentified 4 years later. The public had no way to know if it was connected to the murder.
.
The authorities were also aware that there was foreign DNA found mixed with JonBenét's blood in her panties. It would not match her parents' DNA. It would always pose a problem for the BORG BPD and media.

Charlie Brennan, reporter for the Rocky Mountain News, announced that Geraldo Rivera would be going to Boulder to tape his talk show. The story said he would be taping a show at Pasta Jay's restaurant. It never happened that way - Pasta Jay did not want the dubious honor and declined the offer. Geraldo did go to Boulder, and taped two shows from the lobby of the Alps Boulder Canyon Inn.
